Plagiarism and Data Reuse: New Approaches to Fulfill the Benefits of Data Reuse
Abstract: This presentation will discuss new ideas on bringing the promise of Data Reuse
to concrete reality for practitioners of S1000D, DITA, Learning and Military Documentation.
Going beyond the theoretical, we intend to showcase new technology to explain how Data Reuse
can be further enhanced using both machine learning and heuristics. Ultimately, this

Mr. Mark Thomas
President & Chief Technology Officer
Right Hemisphere
Title: Reducing Media and Documentation Creation
and Management Costs
Abstract:
A large proportion of the lifetime costs of
complex military equipment is tied up in the
ongoing creation and maintenance of
associated
documentation. In addition, the demand for
3D training and maintenance
content is also growing rapidly due to it's
efficiency in displaying and
navigating complex equipment.
Most all modern equipment is designed using
3D CAD and data management
systems. By sourcing and using the original
3D and related data as a basis
for all subsequent related media production
creates an opportunity to lower
the production costs for a wide range of
content from IETM's, S1000D
compliant technical documents, training
systems and parts catalogs.
Additional cost savings can also be achieved
by efficiently managing and
distributing the content across currently
disparate departments encouraging
wide content reuse.
This talk discusses some of the recent
innovations in the management of the
reuse of 3D CAD data for these purposes and
shows where the costs savings
can be achieved in the process.
Biography:
Mr. Mark Thomas is an original
founder of Right Hemisphere and guides Right
Hemisphere's product strategy. Mark is an acknowledged expert in both
engineering graphics (Mechanical CAD, 3D Visualization, FEA, CFD) and
entertainment graphics (Game Animation, Special Effects, 2D/3D Video
Editing). Previously, Mark founded CADS, New Zealand's leading mechanical
CAD reseller. There he supported a wide variety of design and engineering
projects including the CAD/CAM/CAE implementation behind New Zealand's
winning Americas Cup challenge. Mark has a Mechanical Engineering Degree
and Masters paper in Computer Graphics. He is also a graduate of the
Auckland University School of Business.

Mr.
Wayne Gafford
Deputy
Director
ADL
Job Performance Technology Center
Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative Alexandria
Co-Lab, Virginia
Title:
New Training Support in the S1000D
Technical Data Specification: building
support for a S1000D profile of SCORM
Abstract: The international S1000D
technical data standards community has recognized
the requirement to support DoD training content.
During 2007, the S1000D training subcommittee
developed key and fundamental proposals to support
technical data and training content for the newest
edition of S1000D. This presentation will detail how
S1000D version 4 supports training, including new
learning-oriented information models, a SCORM-oriented
aggregation model using native S1000D processing,
instructional design codes for use in S1000D-based
filenames, and guidelines for preplanning reusable
data. The presentation will also present learning
content in S1000D and in its SCORM-conformant
output. Emphasis will be placed on how the use of
S1000D ensures that learning content is in sync with
products and systems it supports. It will conclude
with motivating factors for a S1000D profile of
SCORM.
Biography: Mr. Gafford combines a background in teaching and education
with XML-based standards that has resulted in innovative ideas for e-learning
content management and data interoperability. For the last three years, Mr. Gafford
has lead subcommittees, studies and prototype projects that explore how learning
content can benefit from structured markup. Results have lead to an increased
awareness that standardized metadata and XML structure can unify diverse,
but related content that support common systems, procedures and products.
Mr. Gafford has taken his research to the Advanced Distributed Learning
Initiative where he is now the Deputy Director of the Job Performance Technology Center.
He is a member of the DITA and S1000D learning subcommittees, is an active public speaker
at S1000D and ADL events, and is a supporter of developing XML schemas that model
instructional development and learning content to improve knowledge management
and distributed learning.

Title:
Implementation of S1000D Documents
into the Operational ADF
Abstract: Following our lessons learnt
from implementing the MRH 90 Technical publications
into the operational environment of 5 AVN we
discovered that there is a great deal of issues that
are difficult to consider during acquisition but
become ever present when transition begins. Issues
relating from configuration management of an
electronic publication outside of the AAP management
system to determining the how current ADF management
practices will be arranged to accommodate new media
publication. Our presentation intends to inform
attendees about the possible management related
issues that new projects will face and also outline
solutions that we have developed. Other issues
include, but are not limited to:
-
CSSSO's -47 publications management system and
project implications
-
Publications review processes during operational use
-
Soft copy and hardware management requirements
-
Amendment processes, differing to existing practices
-
CoA and Contractor relationships
Biography: Ross Tatam has worked for
Australian Aerospace (AA) for the past 2 years in
the position of MRH 90 Technical Publications
Manager. He has worked with S1000D for a number of
years and has a great deal of expertise. Prior to
taking on his role at AA, Ross was in the Navy and
had an illustrious career in the technical field. Biography: Patricia Ryan graduated from ADFA in 2005 with a BA
in English. She has held the position of Technical
Data and Publications Manager for the MRH 90 Project
since graduating, and has been responsible for
developing management procedures to see the MRH 90
publications into operational use. She is currently
completing her Masters in Literature through ANU.

Ms
Rhonda Wainwright
S1000D
and IETM Specialist
XyEnterprise
Title:
Full-circle XML: From creation to
delivery and back again
Abstract: Most S1000D users understand the
traditional benefits of using structured data
end-to-end throughout the publishing process. It can
increase consistency and avoid redundancy during
authoring, facilitate automation with controlled
review/approval processes, and provide a framework
for interchange between suppliers, manufacturers,
and operators. Structured data also enables paper,
PDF, and/or HTML publishing outputs from a single
data source. But these traditional benefits are just
the beginning! There are many more efficiencies to
be gained by extending the use of XML as a content
delivery platform and beyond.
This presentation will discuss how technologies such
as AJAX and PDOM facilitate the use of an XML
database as a mobile delivery platform, enabling
agile and personalized content delivery to the
information consumer. Because content remains
unformatted until the instant it is viewed, data can
be filtered at runtime based on language, skill
level, applicability, viewing device, and user
role/privileges. This enables a single “published”
XML database to serve an entire organization,
program, ship, or base, with personalized content
for each user or group.
When also used as a data collection and feedback
format, XML allows publishers to close the loop
between the content consumer and the content
creator. This not only improves the information
resource over time, it can result in significant
savings by reducing false pulls and eliminating
potentially expensive maintenance errors due to
unclear written procedures.
We will explore how “full-circle XML” can facilitate
efficiencies throughout the publishing process,
enhance and personalize the user experience, capture
data for the purpose of identifying trends, and
improve the information resource every time it is
used.
Biography: Rhonda Wainwright is
responsible for sales and marketing of
XyEnterprise’s ContentaView interactive electronic
technical publication software and Contenta S1000D
common support data base and accompanying solution
set. With more than 20 years experience in the
information systems and electronic publishing
fields, she has expertise with XML/SGML content
management, composition, search and retrieval
technology, electronic delivery and revision
management. Her career has included technical,
management, and sales roles at organizations focused
on structured content management and publishing for
commercial aviation and defense. Over the years, Ms.
Wainwright has served on numerous technical
committees in support of digital data standards and
structured content, co-chairing the S. California
CALS Interest Group, and supporting working groups
through SGML Open (OASIS) and the Air Transport
Association. She maintains an excellent working
knowledge of the requirements relevant to aircraft
maintenance technical publications, maintenance
planning, and flight operations documentation.
